Choosing an HMI display

Two businessmen wrestling on stack of computer monitors

When selecting an HMI display for a machine or a plant, it is essential to carefully consider several key factors to ensure efficient and ergonomic control:

1. Display placement and operator control position:
It is important to analyze from where the operator will most frequently control the machine. This will determine the optimal placement of the display, making it easily accessible for the operator while also providing a clear view of the critical parts of the machine or process.

2. Environmental conditions and protection rating (IP standard):
Depending on the environment where the machine will operate (dust, humidity, temperature fluctuations), it is necessary to choose a display with the appropriate protection rating, such as IP65 or IP67, to ensure resistance to dust, water, and other elements. For extreme environments (for potentially explosive atmospheres), ATEX certification must also be guaranteed.

3. Functionality and information display:
It is crucial to know what function the display will fulfill. Should only the basic functions be operated from here or should a large number of process parameters be monitored? How much data and what types of graphical elements (graphs, indicators, alarms, diagnostic information) should the display show to allow the operator to efficiently control the machine?

4. Combination of multiple displays:
In some cases, it may be appropriate to deploy multiple displays, each serving a different part of the control or data display.

5. Different display sizes and design of separate layouts:
If you decide to use displays of various sizes, it is important to consider the design of different layouts for each display. A larger screen may show more complex information with more details, while smaller screens can be designed for simple control elements or displaying only critical data. A good visualization design should always match the display's size and function.

6. Compatibility with HMI software and available hardware interfaces:
The selection of the appropriate HMI display also depends on the software in which the visualization will run and the type of interface required to communicate with the other system, such as a PLC or HMI server. In addition, other hardware interfaces such as USB or Ethernet should be considered to ensure connectivity with other devices to allow software updates and possible system expansion.
