Buttons reset and start

Buttons reset and start

Resetting a safety function only confirms that the hazardous condition has been removed. It should never directly cause the machine to start.

After a safety stop, the machine should remain in a safe and inactive state even if the safety circuit has been restored and alarms have been acknowledged. A new start command should always be required before any motion can occur.

This principle should also be reflected in the design of the operator controls. For example, machines often use a green Start button and a blue Reset button. Each button has a clear and predictable function. The reset button restores the system to a ready state, while the start button intentionally commands the machine to begin operation. This approach supports both safety and operator expectations.

For these reasons, the Safety Reset button should be separate from the Start button, and each button should perform only one clearly defined function.

Following these design guidelines helps prevent unintended machine movement and ensures that restarting the machine always requires a deliberate command.
